Eric Alfred Leslie Satie was born in Honfleur, France on May 17, 1866.
He died on July 1, 1925.
In celebration of the music of Satie, as we approach the 100th anniversary of his passing, Colorado composers Satie & Lease have recorded this new arrangement of Gymnopedies No. 1 with original lyrics.
This haunting, esoteric, and ethereal music reflects the mood and story behind the meaning of Gymnopedie, as it refers to a dance performed at an ancient Greek festival. In translation, gymno refers to naked or unarmed, and pedia means a childish play (dance) or game.
The first Gymnopedie (referring to a nude dance) was first published in 1888, and is part of the Trois Gymnopedies piano compositions.
